An Electron Microscopic Study on the Development of the Sweat Gland in the Korean Fetus

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive and sequential account of the differentiation of the ocarina sweat gland in the Korean fetuses. An electron microscopic study was made on the ocarina sweat gland in the plantar skin of Korean fetuses from 12 to 23 weeks-old, and the following results were obtained.
In fetus 13 weeks-old, the first ocarina sweat gland anlagen were seen as undulation of the basal cell layer with regular intervals. Intradermal region beneath these anlagen appeared to be more cellular than the rest.
In fetus 16 weeks-old, the sweat gland anlagen became lengthened into the dermis and composed of outer columnar cells and central core cells. Outer and core cells were morphologically identical to the cells of the basal cell layer.
In fetus 20 weeks-old, intradermal sweat gland duct first appeared and consisted of outer basal and inner luminal cell layers. The outer cells, columnar in shape, arranged in parallel to the. ductile circumference and interlocked by the cytoplasm processes. The inner cells, cuboidal in shape, showed microvilli, many vesicles, periluminal filamentous zone with interwoven tonofilaments and perinuclear clear zone with many mitochondria.
In fetus 23 weeks-old, the eccrine sweat gland began to form secretory portion. The secetory portion was composed of inner and outer cell layers, inner being secretory cells with clear cytoplasm and outer, myoepithelial cells with dense cytoplasm. At this stage lumen of the secretory portion began to form and were seen as cleft.
